Latest Breaking News Daily: solar eclipse and ring of fire may 20 2012

Special solar eclipse glasses have sold out at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

The city-run observatory is one of the few local places known to sell eclipse glasses, but its stock of 2,500 pairs ran out late Friday night, spokeswoman Susa Szotyori said.

"The glasses are completely gone," Szotyori said. She said the observatory's gift shop had fully expected to have plenty of glasses, which sold for $2.99 each, available through the Sunday eclipse. "They're equally stunned as everyone," she said.

One group in Japan is broadcasting live its ascent of Mt. Fuji to photograph the once-in-a-generation event.

Mt. Fuji, the highest point in Japan, is directly under the full path of the annular eclipse -- one in which the moon blots out all but the sun's outer edge, blocking all sunlight except for a "ring of fire." ("Annular" means "ring" in Latin.)

Astronomers from across the U.S. are flocking to Albuquerque just to take in the solar eclipse, but for thousands of amateurs here are some tips to help you enjoy the event known as the 'ring of fire'. "The disk of the moon is smaller than the disk of the sun so for our location here in Albuquerque, we'll see a perfect ring around the moon," said Dee Friesen President of the Albuquerque Astronomical Society.
Friesen explained he's had hundreds of astronomers RSVP to viewing events and they are from all over the nation. Thousands of people are also flocking to the city just to watch.
One man KRQE News 13 spoke to says he drove 16 hours from Texas just to catch a glimpse.
Onlookers will have to be careful. Looking at direct sunlight, especially when it's intensified by an eclipse can scorch your retina. Retinas don't have pain receptors so damage sets in quickly.

The eclipse starts at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and peaks at 7:33 p.m.
Bernalillo County expects about 3,000 people at it's event at Mesa Del Sol. The will also be teaching kids how to build pinhole cameras and there will be movie screens set up for every to view the eclipse without glasses.
"We have 2,000 pairs of glasses, and we're going to start giving those out about 4 p.m., so if you want some you better get here a little early," Commissioner Wayne Johnson.
Viewers can use welder's goggles but they must be rated 14 or higher. There have also been tint shops selling window tint to make glasses, but not all of them are safe. The tests is, if you hold up the tint to a light bright bulb and you can see the bulb, the tint is not dark enough.
Officials are also discouraging people from going to the top Sandia Crest to watch eclipse. They are worried about parking and fire issues.

Will Smith slaps reporter who tries to kiss him

Don't get fresh with the Prince of Bel-Air.

Will Smith gave a backhanded slap to a Ukranian reporter Friday after the man planted a surprise smooch near the actor's lips at the "Men in Black 3" premier in Moscow, TMZ.com reported.

"Come on man. What the hell is your problem buddy?" Smith snapped when the back-patting hug turned into a kamikaze kiss attack.

After a forceful shove, the "Ali" star ended the encounter with his left hand smacking the young man's cheek.

"Sorry. He kissed me on my mouth," Smith said as he continued down the red carpet with cameras rolling.

"The joker is lucky I didn't sucker punch him," he quipped.

"I'm so sorry," one of his shocked female handlers said.

"No, no. It's all good," Smith said with a laugh as he moved on to the next interview.

SOLAR FlARE STORM WARNING May 11 2012

SOLAR ACTIVITY: Huge sunspot AR1476 is crackling with M-class solar flares and appears to be on the verge of producing something even stronger. The sunspot's 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for X-class flares, the most powerful kind. Earth is entering the line of fire as the sunspot rotates across the face of the sun.
On May 10th around 0418 UT, sunspot 1476 unleashed an impulsive M5-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:
The almost-X class explosion did not hurl a significant CME toward Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chance of more M-class flares and a 20% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours.

About The End of the World 2012: 2012 End of World - About The Prophecy - Society - Environment

Time after time, we have now encountered various prophecies which have been revealed. For about so many centuries from now, it had been then discovered that there is an accurate calendar that will be able to calculate when is the end of everything that exists here on earth. As per the Mayans prediction there will be an end to everything and that is nowadays the talk of the town, the 2012 end of world.|As per the Mayans prediction there will be an end to everything as well as the 2012 end of world has become the talk of the town.}

Some are wondering why Mayan's have the ability to predict such events in the future. The reason for this is that centuries ago, in the case of astronomy, math as well as art, Mayan's were recognized to be a great advancement. They even have a complete written language, and because they've got such knowledge at hand, they became preoccupied with time and began on devising a calendar that is particular enough to tell what happens in the future. It showed more precise prediction of events in the future since the calendar is based on planetary, lunar and solar activities.

You will find some instances that prophecies based on the calendar itself showed that it did happened in the future like for example the arrival of the known Cortez (Spanish explorer) and other adventurers who accompanies him in New World at Tobaco shores. Then there was also the best important among all prediction which has to do with the alignment of Earth to our Sun that's more often known as the cosmic alignment that happens every 25,800 years.

Octopus eats seagull

The Giant Pacific Octopus can be seen regularly patrolling the shallows of the shorelines around Victoria. They primarily feed on crustaceans, but are known to occasionally take fish and even birds. Octopi are extremely intelligent animals, and great problem solvers. Although they live only about four years, they can grow to have a span of more than 20 feet and to weigh more than 100 pounds. This one wasn’t that large, but it was still an impressive individual. What was even more impressive, though, was that it had one of its tentacles wrapped around the head of the gull, holding it under water.

Mother's Day Gift For Your Wife With less than a month to go before Mother's Day it's high time you started thinking about getting the mother of your children a beautiful gift to show your appreciation and love for her. If you don't think about it now you'll end up buying her an overpriced box of chocolates and bunch of hybrid flowers from the 7/11 thereby failing on two accounts: 1, to remember the day and 2, to come up with anything but a very run-of-the-mill, production line item that is not going to express what you might want to! The mother of your children is unique and she does a fantastic and difficult job bringing up your children- her Mother's Day gift must reflect this and it must arrive in a timely fashion. So, what to do about this? Workers demand pay hikes at Asia's May Day marches

May Day moved beyond its roots as an international workers' holiday to a day of international protest Tuesday, with rallies throughout Asia demanding wage increases and marches planned across Europe over government-imposed austerity measures.
Europeans will take to the streets to protest against the measures that are being blamed for a big increase in the number of unemployed, particularly in Spain where one in four people is out of work.
In the United States, demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are planned, including what could be the country's most visible Occupy rallies since the anti-Wall Street encampments came down in the fall.
In Asia, thousands of May Day protesters in the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan demanded hikes in pay that they say has not kept up with rising consumer prices, while also calling for lower school fees and expressing a variety of other gripes.
In Moscow, around 100,000 people — including President Dmitry Medvedev and president-elect Vladimir Putin — took part in the main march through the city center.
Television images showed the two leaders happily chatting with participants on the clear-and-cool spring day.
Many banners and placards criticized the opposition movement that has become more prominent in Moscow over the past half-year. One read "spring has come, the swamp has dried up," referring to Bolotnaya (Swampy) Square, the site of some of the largest opposition demonstrations of recent months.
In Asia, the push for wage increases was a common theme.
"It is always the case that low-income groups across Asia feel a disproportionately larger impact of rising prices," said Wai Ho Leong, a Singapore-based economist with Barclays Capital. "Coupled with rising inflation expectations, the case is building to do more for lower income (workers). Minimum wages are one way."
In the Philippine capital, Manila, about 8,000 members of a huge labor alliance, many clad in red shirts and waving red streamers, marched under a brutal sun for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the heavily barricaded Mendiola bridge near the Malacanang presidential palace, which teemed with thousands of riot police, Manila police chief Alex Gutierrez said.
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III rejected their calls for a $3 daily pay hike, which he warned could worsen inflation, spark layoffs and turn away foreign investors.
Aside from pay hikes, protest leader Josua Mata from the Alliance of Progressive Labor urged Aquino to back proposed legislation against the widespread practices by businesses of contracting out certain operations to other companies to save on costs and preventing workers from organizing trade unions.
In Taiwan, several thousand anti-government protesters marched through downtown Taipei, demanding higher wages, lower school tuition and better conditions for foreign workers.
In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, some 500 people rallied, calling for a higher minimum wage than the one announced Monday by Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Najib's plan for the country's first-ever minimum wage calls for minimum monthly pay of 900 ringgit ($297) for private-sector workers in peninsula Malaysia and 800 ringgit ($264) in two poor eastern states. The move is expected to benefit 3.2 million low-income workers, who account for about a third of the country's work force.
The protesters marched from a market to the headquarters of Maybank, the nation's largest bank, calling for a minimum monthly wage of 1,500 ringgit ($496) a month.

Europe global May Day labour protests

Labour demonstrations marking May Day are taking place across the world, with the main focus on Europe and its backdrop of unpopular austerity measures and rising social unrest.
Greece, Spain and Portugal are set to hold large nationwide demonstrations.
At a Paris rally, National Front leader Marine Le Pen is expected to tell her supporters who they should vote for in Sunday's presidential run-off vote.
The Occupy protest movement has urged May Day action spanning the globe.
'Real work' Anti-austerity protesters will take part in a day of strikes and demonstrations across Greece.
The BBC's Mark Lowen in Athens says the 1 May protests there have become an institution, with public and private sector strikes and disruption to public transport.
But he says there may be less of the traditional violence, since minds are focused on Sunday's general election, when many Greeks are expected to vent their anger against the austerity measures.

Elections on Sunday are also the main focus in France.
Ms Le Pen will lead a march in Paris to the statue of Joan of Arc, an iconic figure for the far right.
She has promised to indicate where the 6.5m voters who supported her in the first round of the presidential election should cast their votes on Sunday, in the crucial second round between President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Socialist candidate Francois Hollande.
The BBC's Gavin Hewitt says the expectation is that she will advise them to abstain.
Mr Sarkozy will rally in Trocadero Square, while French unions march to the Bastille.
Mr Sarkozy has dubbed his rally a showcase of "real work".
Mr Hollande said Mr Sarkozy was more the president of "real unemployment".
The main May Day rally in Spain is expected to get under way in Madrid at about 10:00 GMT, while Portugal's labour unions will rally in the afternoon.
In Russia, nationalists, communists and opponents of incoming president Vladimir Putin are all holding separate rallies.
Mr Putin and outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev made a rare joint public appearance on the streets of Moscow, leading more than 100,000 people in a Soviet-style "Holiday of Labour and Spring" march.

May Day protests planned, may disrupt commutes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — May Day protests may disrupt the morning commute in major U.S. cities Tuesday as labor, immigration and Occupy activists rally support on the international workers' holiday.
Demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are being planned around the country, including the most visible organizing effort by anti-Wall Street groups since Occupy encampments came down in the fall.
While protesters are backing away from a call to block San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, bridge district ferry workers said they'll strike Tuesday morning to shut down ferry service, which brings commuters from Marin County to the city. Ferry workers have been in contract negotiations for a year and have been working without a contract since July 2011 in a dispute over health care coverage, the Inlandboatmen's Union said.
A coalition of bridge and bus workers said they will honor the picket line, which may target an area near the bridge's toll plaza. Occupy activists from San Francisco and Oakland are expected to join the rally.
"We ask supporters to stand with us at strike picket lines on May Day and to keep the bridge open," said Alex Tonisson, an organizer and co-chair of the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition.
In anticipation of the strike, the agency that operates the Golden Gate Bridge and related public transportation systems canceled Tuesday's morning ferries from Marin County to San Francisco and urged regular riders to make alternate travel plans.
Police say they are working with other area law enforcement agencies and have a plan in place for potential disruptions. They would not discuss specifics.
Across the bay in Oakland, where police and Occupy protesters have often clashed, officers are preparing for a long day as hundreds of "General Strike" signs have sprouted across town.
In New York City, where the first Occupy camp was set up and where large protests brought some of the earliest attention — and mass arrests — to the movement, leaders plan a variety of events, including picketing, a march through Manhattan and other "creative disruptions against the corporations who rule our city."
Organizers have called for protesters to block one or more bridges or tunnels connecting Manhattan, the city's economic engine, to New Jersey and other parts of the city.
The Occupy movement began in September with a small camp in a lower Manhattan plaza that quickly grew to include hundreds of protesters using the tent city as their home base. More than 700 people were arrested Oct. 1 as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
The city broke the camp up in November, citing sanitary and other concerns, but the movement has held smaller events and protests periodically since then.
Elsewhere on the West Coast, Occupy Seattle has called for people to rally at a park near downtown Tuesday. Mayor Mike McGinn has warned residents there could be traffic delays and has said city officials have evidence — including graffiti and posters — that some groups plan to "commit violence, damage property and disrupt peaceful free speech activity."
In Los Angeles, Occupy is organizing a daylong "people's power and bike caravan" that will start from the four cardinal directions around the city in the morning, converging on downtown LA's financial district in the mid afternoon for an approximately 90-minute protest. The themes of the marches are foreclosures and police brutality.
In a website statement, Occupy LA promised the event will be "city-paralyzing" and "carnivalesque" with en route actions including a food giveaway in a South Los Angeles park, and mini-rallies outside the Veterans' Affairs and Bank of America buildings in West Los Angeles.

May 1 protests actions are planned across the country

NEW YORK, May 1 (Reuters) - Occupy Wall Street vows a day of demonstrations in New York and across the United States on Tuesday, in a crucial test of its staying power some eight months after emerging as a movement against corporate greed and economic inequality.
The "99 Percent" populist movement, which began as a 24-hour encampment in lower Manhattan last fall and spread to cities across the country, will join organized labor for a day of May 1 protests, in what it has called a "day without the 99 percent."
Dozens of actions are planned across the country, though there is some skepticism over how many people will turn out and whether it will spell Occupy's resurgence. The event was first billed as a "General Strike," but organized labor declined to sign on to that call.
Inspired by the pro-democracy Arab Spring, the Wall Street protesters last year targeted U.S. financial policies they blamed for the yawning income gap between rich and poor - between what they called the 1 percent and the 99 percent.
But since last fall, when scores of demonstrators set up a vigil in lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park and Occupy boasted it had $500,000 in the bank, donations have slowed to a point where Occupy was left in a cash crunch earlier this year.
There is also evidence of media fatigue, with mentions of the term "Occupy Wall Street" down 75 percent this month compared to late last year. So far in April, the term has appeared in 4,323 articles, according to the Factiva data base. Last October, the same search yielded 17,327 references.
Chris Hedges, a former journalist and one-time vocal supporter of Occupy Wall Street, said the movement has been plagued with internal problems since it swelled in size. He said he did not expect May Day to "resurrect the movement."
"If you look closely at movements, they don't follow a sort of straight trajectory upwards. They stumble, fall, have reverses - sometimes, they're crushed," he said. But Hedges cautioned that writing off Occupy based on the success of May Day would be "short-sighted."
Occupy Oakland has called for protesters to "occupy" the Golden Gate Bridge in a show of solidarity with bridge workers who are engaged in a contract dispute over wages and benefits. In New York, protesters plan to set up a "pop-up encampment" in midtown's Bryant Park and then join organized labor for a permitted march starting at Union Square.
Some in New York have vowed to disrupt commuter traffic, but Occupy said it would have no involvement in that.
